John tirelessly served the SCCS for many decades and was regarded as Australia's most eminent Carboniferous specialist. He was Chair of the SCCS (1996-2000) during the period of the establishment of the Mid-Carboniferous (Mississippian-Pennsylvanian) boundary GSSP - a rather turbulent time for the SCCS!
